Our Citizen's Police Academy Program has become a great success and we would like to offer as many people as possible a chance to attend our classes! We offer eleven informative classes and a Graduation Ceremony where the students are awarded a Certificate of Completion. Its not too early to register for our Fall 2006 session! We anticipate starting our tenth Citizen's Police Academy in September of 2006. Classes will be held in the evenings from 6:30 PM till 9:00 PM in the Police Department's Training Room.

What is a Citizen's Police Academy?

It is a program designed to enhance the relationship between the community's citizens and their police department. The concept of the Citizen Police Academy (CPA) was developed in 1977 by the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary in England. In the United States, the Orlando Police began the first "Police Night School" which evolved into the Citizen Police Academy. Today there are thousands of Citizen Police Academies throughout the world.

The goal of the academy is to educate participants in the program concerning the operations of its police department and the "how and why" of police response to given situations. Participants will become more knowledgeable about such things as the Community Policing Unit and the concepts of Community Policing; D.A.R.E.; Bike Patrol, the K-9 Handler and the K-9 police dog, just to name a few (see course curriculum below). These units and others are not only vital to the police department, but are also essential to the safety of the community.

Who may attend the Academy?

While preference will be given to Johnson City residents over the age of eighteen who are members of our Neighborhood Watch Program, the Academy is open to any Johnson City resident, Business Person or Professional over the age of eighteen. Applications from non-Village residents will be considered if openings are available.

An applicant may be required by the Johnson City Police Department to have a Confidential Criminal History Background Check completed before enrollment in the Academy is authorized.
