We have a new link to the Neighborhood Watch
Ptl. Paul Burnett has assumed most of the duties of the Community Policing Officer due to Ptl. Parkison's retirement. Ptl. Burnett can be contacted at (607) 729-9321 or click here to send him an e-mail.
In 1997 the department set up a Community Policing Unit to build a partnership with the people of Johnson City and enlist their aid in combating the proliferation of illicit narcotics within our Village. With this influx of drugs comes a corresponding increase in property crimes such as burglary and larceny.
For the past several years, and especially since the implementation of the "911" system, the Police Department has been primarily reactive to calls for service. With the creation of the Community Policing Unit the department has been able to take a pro-active approach to crime; meaning that the community can be enlisted to help attack the "root" causes of a problem and correct them. Once the problem is corrected the symptoms (burglaries, thefts, disorderly behavior etc) will go away.
The unit is manned full time by Patrolman Kevin Parkison. He takes a pro-active approach to addressing neighborhood problems and his primary goal is to establish and maintain a partnership between the Village residents and the Police Department. This partnership will make our community a safer place by reducing crime, the fear of crime, and improving our overall quality of life.
The Community Policing Unit oversees such Village wide programs as Neighborhood Watch and our Citizen's Police Academy. These programs are designed to get the Village residents involved with our department on a friendly, non-confrontational basis; so that they are not worried about "bothering" us by reporting suspicious activity.
Through the Neighborhood Watch residents are reminded what it means to be a good neighbor. They are taught how to look out for each other without becoming "nosy neighbors". They learn how to recognize various forms of suspicious behavior, how to protect themselves and their homes and to be particularly alert to Gypsies, molesters and others who prey on our most vulnerable neighbors; the very old and the very young. By being involved in the Neighborhood Watch you help drive crime away by showing criminals that you care about where you live and intend to protect the quality of your life.
Our Citizen's Police Academy enhances the relationship between the police department and the community by showing the residents and business owners of the Village how the department operates. Students learn about our specialized units, Bike Patrol, D.A.R.E. etc.) as well as how the day to day operations of the department are handled.
You can learn more about our Citizen's Police Academy and fill out an application for the next session by clicking here.
Ptl Parkison can also tailor programs aimed at the needs of your neighborhood. Whether it is a specific problem affecting your quality of life or you would like for him to address your neighborhood or civic group please let him know.
With the support and involvement of the people of Johnson City we can work together to make our village-wide "neighborhood" an even safer place to live, work, raise a family and call home.
Patrolman Parkison is available to answer any questions and address any problems and concerns that you might have.
