Johnson City Police Department

D.A.R.E.

The Johnson City Police Department, as part of our Community Policing Unit, provides the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program to the students of the public and private schools in Johnson City. This program is led by Officer Paul J. Burnett.DARE car

The D.A.R.E. Program was created as a joint venture of the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Unified School District. A highly trained Police Officer is sent in to the sixth grade classrooms for a period of 17 weeks to teach students how to refuse drugs and alcohol. Ptl Burnett

The Johnson City Police Department started their D.A.R.E. Program in 1989, and soon after expanded the program into the Junior High. It is the only Police Department in Broome County that has a High School curriculum and Off. Burnett works closely with the High School, Middle School and Elementary School staffs.

Students in the public and private schools of Johnson City receive an age appropriate D.A.R.E. Program from first grade though their high school years. The curriculum begins by teaching young children the dangers of drug abuse in a non-threatening playful manner, progress through methods to both fight and use peer pressure and go on to cover alcohol abuse and drunkeness by teens. Anyone with school age children knows how eagerly they look forward to their D.A.R.E. classes.

Officer Burnett is available to answer any questions and address concerns that residents may have concerning the D.A.R.E. program by calling (607) 729-9322 Ext. 226.
