Promotion For Patrol Commander

On August 28, 2008 Lt. Wayne Steffen was promoted to the rank of Captain. The 19 year veteran will continue in the position of Patrol Division Commander and will be the second highest ranking member of the department until a new Asst. Chief is named.

Administrative Captain Retires

June 18, 2008 marked the end of a rewarding career for Administrative Capt. Theodore J. Wido Jr.
Capt. Wido joined our department in 1982 and spent the next 26 years serving the people of Johnson City. During his time here Capt. Wido held assignments as a K-9 Officer, Detective Division Commander and a Hostage Negotiator. We wish him a long and fruitful retirement.

New Officer Joins Department

On March 27, 2008 Nicholas Simonik was sworn in as the newest member of the Village of Johnson City Police Department. Ptl. Simonik is currently attending the B.C. Law Enforcement Academy and looks forward to the day when he can fully serve the residents of Johnson City.

Lieutenants graduate from F.B.I. Academy

Two more of our officers have graduated from the F.B.I. National Academy in Quantico, Va.
Lt. Darren Hannon attended the 230th session of the Academy from July 8th through September 14, 2007 while Lt David Smith was a member of the 232nd session, which ran from January 6th through March 14, 2008.

Hundreds of students, representing Local, State, National and Military law enforcement agencies as well as the law enforcement agencies of over 150 different countries, attend the prestigious 11 week Academy. Attendance is by a nomination process and the FBI only accepts those officers that they believe will become leaders in their field.
When Lt. Smith and Lt. Hannon graduated they became the 6th and 7th members of our department, including Chief Potts and Capt. Wido, who have attended the National Academy; the most of any local agency.

JC Officer Indicted

On October 3, 2007 Officer Matthew Romano was arraigned in the Broome County Court on one count of Offering A False Report For Filing in the First Degree and one count of Falsely Reporting An Incident after an investigation by the Johnson City Police Department found reason to believe that he had lied about being stabbed by an unknown assailant in the Calvary Cemetary in December of 2006.

The members of the Johnson City Police Department want to assure you that the support you provided during the investigation of the reported stabbing is in no way diminished by the revelation that Ptl. Romano may have lied about the attack. We want you to know that Ptl. Romano is not representative of the members of this department, that we find his alleged actions as inexcusable as you do and that we will pursue any investigation to the end, no matter where it leads.

You can watch the news video NEWS10 regarding this below.

New Officers Join the Department

On April 12, 2007 Akoko Viengkham was sworn in as a member of the Johnson City Police Department.
On April 23rd he was followed by Michael T Mason, Theodore Scwartz and Camaron Hillman
These officers begin the Basic Police School at the Broome County Law Enforcement Academy immediately. The Academy is approximately 6 months long and they will have to spend about another month in Field Training before they will be allowed to work by themselves.
We hope you will join us in welcoming these fine young men to our department.

Re-Accreditation at JCPD

In July we had a 3 day on-site evaluation by assessors from the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services Law Enforcement Accreditation Program.

This evaluation was to determine whether or not we had maintained the high standards of the Accreditation Program for the past five years. After an exhaustive inspection of our policies and documentation, as well as interviews with members of the department, we were found to be in full compliance.

DCJS hosted a ceremony in September honoring the Law Enforcement Agencies which had achieved or maintained Accredited status. In the photo below Mayor Lewis and Capt. Wido receive the Certificate of Accreditation from Dr. Cedric Alexander, Deputy Director, Office of Public Safety.

This Certificate joins our original Accreditation Certificate from 1996 and our Re-Accreditation Certificate from 2001 in the lobby of our station.
